The Big Push and Disruption Ventures Team up to Support Women-led Technology Startups
TORONTO – May 7, 2019 – The Big Push accelerator and Disruption Ventures fund today announced a partnership designed to provide women-led technology startups with access to both expert resources and early stage growth financing. While The Big Push supports business acceleration through hands-on support to help startups meet the investment criteria for venture financing, Disruption Ventures will provide $500,000 to $2MM in Seed or Series A financing to qualified startups that are going through an acceleration with The Big Push.
“Through our collaboration with Disruption Ventures, we are addressing and removing one of the biggest obstacles faced by women founders, and that is access to early stage growth financing,” said Sharon Zohar, founder and CEO of The Big Push. “Providing access to experts who will roll up their sleeves to support a business acceleration is the first step in helping to increase the odds of success for startups. The second step is providing ready access to a source of financing through a fund that was created specifically to remove the barriers to success for women-led technology startups.”
The Big Push business accelerator provides services in exchange for equity to technology startups founded by women. Through its collective of senior executives with expertise across key practice areas (such as finance, marketing, sales, public relations, recruitment, etc.), startups gain access to critical resources to help accelerate the business over a nine-month period, addressing identified needs ranging from revenue acceleration and customer growth to capital funding. The value of services provided through the acceleration period ranges from $150,000 to $250,000.
“Together with The Big Push, we aim to deliver the greatest impact for startups that are founded or led by women and are looking to achieve global market readiness,” said Elaine Kunda, founder and Managing Partner at Disruption Ventures. “Our missions are aligned, and together we are creating a winning formula that positions our portfolio companies for success.”
Disruption Ventures is Canada’s first private female-founded venture capital fund for women entrepreneurs. The firm invests in early stage companies founded or led by women, created to solve real problems, with teams that are committed to succeed, and are in markets that demonstrate high growth potential.
According to VC database PitchBook, technology startups with all-women teams received only 2.2% of the $85 billion invested by venture capitalists in 2017. Despite this severe funding gap, startups founded or co-founded by women performed better over time, generating 10% more in cumulative revenue over a five-year period, according to BCG. The partnership between The Big Push and Disruption Ventures aims to address this funding gap.
